18 cases of tuberculous peripleural absess surgically treated at St. Mary´s Hospital of C.M.C. between Jan. 1962 to March 1967 were analized, and it´s mechanism of occurance, pathogenesis, treatment and implications with so called "Rib Caries" will be considered.
24 patients admitted under the diagnosis of tuberculous peripleural abscess consisted of 18 tuberculous origin. 2 non-specific suppurative abscess, 1 granulocytic hyper-plasia and 3 n0 remarkable findings by pathological examination.
Although some had been suggested that the tuberculous abscess of the thoracic wall developed as a secondary disease from rib caries , but now it has become clear that this abscess originated from between eendothoracic fascia and parietal pleura usually following previous pleurisy, as we cofirmed, and not from rib caries.
Proper drainage involving wide incision, rib resection, if needed, and curettage wih anti tbc. drugs are most helpful proceduer for treatment of tuberculous peripleural abscess.
